Mozart: Quartet in E-flat Major, K428

Smetana: Quartet no. 2 in D minor

Schubert: Quartet in D minor, D. 810,

      ‘Death and the Maiden’

The renowned Czech Wihan Quartet present three masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire. In a gesture at once humble and assured, Mozart dedicated his E-flat quartet to his colleague and friend Joseph Haydn, the undisputed master of quartet-writing. Smetana’s raw and profoundly personal second quartet is a diary of his final illness, whilst Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ fortells his own premature demise.
